RETAIL PHARMACY REGISTRATION AND ACCREDITATION FOR INTERNSHIP IN NIGERIA

With the number of pharmacy schools and thus pharmacy graduates increasing number in Nigeria, it has become important that more retail pharmacies are registered and accredited to undertake internship programs. This is because a lot of young pharmacists are now waiting for months just to secure a place for internship.

Unfortunately we are not getting commensurate increase in number of pharmacy registration and accreditation for internship purpose.

Pharmacist council of Nigeria needs to start encouraging more registered retail pharmacy owners to apply for pharmacy registration and accreditation of their premises as internship centres.

There are a lot of retail pharmacy owners who would love to have pharmacy registration and accreditation of their premises for internship but most do not know what it takes to do that.

I think the upcoming ACPN conference is a wonderful opportunity for PCN to plead with more community pharmacy owners to come and apply for pharmacy registration and accreditation for internship..

It is really not fair on these young pharmacy graduates to have to wait for months to get a location to do their internship program.

If more retail pharmacies get on board, this will create a lot of opportunities for young pharmacy graduates some of whom are even ready to do their internship with little pay. A lot of young pharmacists have missed several batches of Youth service postings because they were not able to get an internship placement on time.

These young pharmacy graduates need to be encouraged by the older pharmacists in the profession. And the best way for us to go about this is for Pharmacist council of Nigeria to start reaching out to big community pharmacy owners and requesting that they get pharmacy registration and accreditation for internship.

From an experience of one of my clients who was approached by a Pharmacist council of Nigeria staff to get her place approved for internship, the process did not take much time and as at now close to five intern pharmacists are passing through her system.
