Every day I get lots of calls from young pharmacists who want to know what can be done to make young pharmacists rich in Nigeria. This is because a lot of them look at the options before them and they don’t see any bright future especially for those that rush to Lagos and Abuja after their Youth service.

But there is a way that the Pharmacist Council of Nigeria can use to make young pharmacists rich in Nigeria. The first solution is for the Pharmacist Council of Nigeria to approve more internship Locations in community pharmacies outside Lagos. This is because a lot of young pharmacists settle down in the states where they did their internship and they see that there are fewer pharmacies in that state, they would want to establish their own retail pharmacy in that state. Because competition is less in those other states, and cost of living usually low, it would be easier for them to succeed there.
I recently was in Abia state to run a training for pharmacists sponsored by Geneith Pharm ltd. I was amazed at the small number of registered community pharmacies in Aba. If more Locations are approved for internship in Abia state for instance, then more young pharmacists would want to settle there after their internship.
If we have more internship locations in community pharmacies in other states, making more young pharmacists rich would be easier and thus the prestige of the profession will be boosted also.
The second thing Pharmacist Council of Nigeria can do to make young pharmacists rich is to liaise with the National youth service corps (NYSC) to start posting corpers to community Pharmacies in states with fewer numbers of retail pharmacies. This will help the owners of the pharmacies to be sure that a pharmacists is always on duty in their premises at a salary that they can easily afford since corper allowance is low.
Most importantly too, because most graduates tend to settle where they did there service, we will start seeing more high standard pharmacies opening up in these other states so that through these means making young pharmacists rich will be an easy project for the pharmacist council of Nigeria.
